So, what do you do all day?

Recently, I answered this class for a Library Science Class.  I spent a lot of time on my answer, so I will get two uses out of it and post it here.

Official Title - High School Librarian
Roles:
Teacher - responsible for
  • writing the curriculum and teaching Careers in Librarianship (please ask me about this course),
  • facilitating any online classes any student might be taking,
  • housing any student who moves schools mid-semester and cannot be placed in a for-credit elective,
  • increasing test scores in the "using information resources" area of the GEE and EOC tests,
  • teaching research skills,
  • working with teachers and students to create and follow through with great projects throughout the year (some of our projects include - national cultural exchange project with FACS class, award-winning local black history documentary, Veteran's interview project, video conferences with NASA and other organizations) 
  • presenting at local, state, and (in the future) national conferences and inservices in order to educate the educators
Clerk - responsible for
  • checking in and out books,
  • managing student holds,
  • processing ILL books,
  • accepting money for fines – each student must receive a receipt and each receipt issued must be dually documented,
  • reshelving books,
  • reading shelves,
  • processing and scheduling all requests for library use
Tech Support – responsible for
  • all video conferencing equipment,
  • maintaining school website,
  • assisting all faculty members in the event of a technical problem,
  • working with the district technology center to pilot new policies,
  • setting up and “tearing” down all school computer labs,
  • preparing all computers for EOC testing,
  • replacing paper, ink, etc. and troubleshooting for all library printers, copiers, scanners
Librarian – responsible for
  • cataloging materials,
  • organizing materials,
  • maintaining library website,
  • submitting equipment order to the Library Services Department,
  • submitting supply order to the Library Services Department,
  • submitting book order to the Library Services Department,
  • evaluating library collection,
  • weeding materials,
  • readers advisory,
  • professional growth through library organizations and associations,
  • book reviews and blogs (http://just1hslibrarian.blogspot.com/),
  • maintaining a binder documenting how I have met all requirements listed in my official job description,
  • defending materials in a collection from official and unofficial censorship by reading book reviews, YALSA lists, and any other official material,
  • keeping up-to-date with school library innovation by reading School Library Journal and other scholarly material 
Faculty Member – responsible for
  • attending and participating in all school meetings,
  • chaperoning school dances and athletic events,
  • assisting with graduation,
  • writing or assisting with grant opportunities,
  • morning and lunch duty daily,
  • assisting with the school improvement plan,
  • doing pretty much whatever the administration says to do
Barista – responsible for
  • selling coffee shop tickets,
  • reconciling ticket sells and turning in money daily,
  • product inventory,
  • product ordering
Unofficial Counselor – responsible for
·         assisting in scheduling college courses when seniors are attempting this in the library,
·         assisting in scheduling ACT tests and retrieving scores when students are attempting this in the library,
·         listening to sometimes disturbing personal stories from students who feel they can trust you because you recommended a book that they could relate to,
·         unfortunately, sometimes calling CPS to report abuse (see bullet above)
